Argo Preview

In Greek mythology ‘Argo’ was the name of the ship upon which Jason and the Argonauts ventured forth on their voyage to retrieve the fabled Golden Fleece. Ben Affleck’s Argo portrays an undertaking of equally insurmountable odds, as a group of CIA operatives strive to rescue six stranded US embassy workers from a late seventies Iran gripped by chaos and violent revolution. Under the guise of a Canadian film crew scouting locations for a trashy sci-fi flick, the team infiltrate Tehran and initiate one of the most audacious escape plans in modern history. Director and leading man Affleck’s Hollywood career is one of the most chequered in history, spanning from schlocky gossip-rag pin-up to powerhouse director. Following two of the most tightly wound action thrillers in recent memory (Gone Baby Gone, The Town) his time spent behind the camera has proved extraordinarily fruitful – the recounting of Argo’s true life story proving no exception. Alluding influences of The Great Escape and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy whilst boasting the flamboyance of Soderbergh’s Ocean’s trilogy, Argo is one journey you will definitely want to embark upon.
